THE GRIBEAUVAL SYSTEM

The officer and engineer Jean-Baptiste Vaquette de Gribeauval reformed French field artillery in the 18th century. From 1765, he standardised cannon design and created the first artillery system which still bears his name. Superior to other european systems, Gribeauval's cannon partly explains the success of the revolutionary and Napoleonic armies.

On display at the Army Museum in Paris.
